A Very Terrier Wedding: Dogs at Weddings

Adam’s Point of View

Their eyes locked, and they fell instantly in love.

That’s the story the dog mommies of these two love birds imagined when we at Succulents for Hire popped the question: “Can Mona and Bigote get married?”

Having dogs at weddings is becoming more popular these days, whether they act as the ring bearer, flower girl, best man, or even walk the bride down the aisle. Many modern betrothed can’t imagine going through this milestone big day without their fur babies by their side.

This wedding, however, was all about the dogs, an adorably perfect wedding day scene centered around two cooperative terrier mixes who just adore each other—never a better example of puppy love. They’re the sweetest buddies who lay on the couch together at parties, travel together, and even go on long hikes and climbing excursions with their human family members together.

Bigote, a Costa Rican doggy who moved to Berkeley with his mom after her semester abroad, is a wire-haired hunk with coloring in the pattern of a brown tuxedo. Mona, a Mexican muppet pooch who met her mom at a San Francisco dog rescue organization, is a little white floof with out-turned feet and a snaggletooth. These two best friends couldn’t be more perfect together, and thus, A Very Terrier Wedding was written into the books.

The Pawsome Ceremony

The decor and wedding attire for this dog wedding ceremony was everything. Not only did Mona and Bigote need some gussying up, courtesy of Two Back Flats (adorable tiny hats and Big's bowtie) and Succulents for Hire (succulent floral collar and boutonniere), they also needed to be set inside a scene perfect for the occasion: a grassy park shaded by giant redwood trees in the heart of Alameda, California.

Starting with a bright palette of tertiary colors, event planner Zeina Razek envisioned a dog-sized teepee adorned with colorful ribbon, to which we adorned a colorful spray of succulents, florals, and greenery. The aisle itself was a loose white muslin sprinkled with pink and orange mini-tennis balls and lined with matching rope toys and greenery. Guests would sit atop tiny dog pillows while Mona and Bigote exchanged their vows and say "I do." (Mostly they just got lots of treats for being so good!)

“Bone” Appetít: The Ridogulously Cute Reception

Razek was at it again in envisioning the decor for the reception. Each place setting featured hand-labeled rawhide bones (courtesy of us), which set against pink dog bowls filled with star-shaped treats for these superstar mutts. Blue frisbee “chargers” and colorful floral and succulent centerpieces finished off the look while the bride and groom looked on, eager to dig in.

Desserts!

The dessert table, featuring bride’s and groom’s cakes by Two Chicks in the Mix and lots of yummy cookies—all dog-friendly treats—was filled with blasts of color and creative styling by Razek. Continuing with the tennis ball theme that ran through the whole shoot, the folks at Two Chicks in the Mix decorated the groom’s cake with edible tennis balls as cake toppers and created a green watercolor effect with the icing on both of the wedding cake. Gold flecks and succulents really made the two-tiered bridal cake pop, while gold floral hoops adorned by us (Succulents for Hire) framed the backdrop, creating a playful, bouncy ambiance for the two love birds.

Adam’s Point of View Photography caught each and every element of the day beautifully. The wedding photos that came out of this event were colorful, bright, and edited to fit with the whimsical and fun nature of the day's work. From start to finish, Adam Suguitan was at the ready, snapping away to get the perfect shots of these furry friends on their special day. Photographing dogs can be a challenge, but he handled it like a champ, working with the dog moms to get the perfect angles and expressions on these adorable faces. After posing for all the photos they could stand, Mona and Bigote celebrated their newlywed status, each with their own slice of lavender cake. Mona went home with a few pink tennis balls too!

Your Wedding Day

If you're considering bringing your best bud along on your big day, we absolutely encourage you to do it! Dogs can be an adorable and heart-felt addition to any wedding party (venue permitting, of course), whether you want a "dog of honor," a "flower dog," or a "ring bearer." Throw on a color-coordinated tutu, a bow tie, or one of our succulent floral collars, and your furry friend will be the talk of the party. And we promise they'll be an adorable addition to all your family photos from your big day as well.

If you're a dog lover who happens to fall in love with a venue that isn't dog-friendly—or if you're worried that some paws might snag some dresses at the party, consider giving your K9 loved one a spot in your engagement photo session instead. This way, you'll be able to include your four-legged family member in your celebration, even if they can't come to the formal ceremony.
